Graphic Memoir - Students will employ both words and pictures to tell stories from our personal histories and those that have been passed down to us from our relatives. We’ll get our “feet wet” in this sequential art experiment by creating simple cartoon “avatars” as stand-ins for ourselves and others and use them in 4-panel comics to tell stories from childhood, school days and first jobs. We’ll examine the work of cartoonists (Barry, Chast, Kochalka,Satrapi,Telgemeier) who’ve written graphic memoirs, to understand how they use pacing and lettering and how they make their pages pop through line work, areas of solid black and color. For this class we’ll be using pencil, Flair and Micron pens and colored pencils. Instructor: Megan Jeffery (6 weeks)
