Barry Sutherland Player of the Year Award


Barry Sutherland was born and raised in Cheshire. Barry was always an avid participant and supporter of all sports in Cheshire. He played youth basketball and was a rostered player for Dodd Middle School and Cheshire High School (#13). As an adult, Barry also played for years in the Parks & Recreation Department's Men's Basketball League. Barry was a member of the Cheshire High School Class of 1970. Standing at 6'7", #13 was a stand out Cheshire High School Basketball Player possessing many records; he was inducted into the Cheshire High Hall of Fame in 2013. Barry went on to coach for many years in the PREC Youth Basketball League. His encouragement, knowledge of the game, infectious spirit and high energy made him a player's coach who loved to see children develop their game and become great team mates. 

In Barry's memory, the Barry Sutherland Player of the Year will be awarded commencing with the 2023-2024 Season. The award will be presented to the player in the George Welch Basketball League who best embodies Barry Sutherland's character. The award will be presented to the selected player during a brief ceremony held just prior to the league championship game and a plaque will be installed at the Harmon Leonard, Jr. Youth Center to commemorate players year to year.
