Volunteer Opportunities (Gr. 7 - 12) - Youth Literacy "C" Summer session 6/13-7/18/26 SAT
Youth Literacy Volunteer Role:This program is designed to promote confidence among young readers in Kindergarten through 2nd grade by working one-on-one with a teen mentor each week. Volunteers with assist with reading, comprehension and lend a hand with worksheets, daily craft project and indoor/outdoor activities. Being a volunteer your role is to help demonstrate the importance of reading and the part literacy will play in the young readers life as they grow older. Summer Camp Volunteers:As a volunteer for the Summer, you will work with the Yellow House staff to keep the camp running smoothly by helping to set up and cleaning up daily activities and assisting children throughout the day with indoor and outdoor games & activities, and help with arts & crafts. Volunteers are expected to arrive 15 minutes early and stay 15 minutes after the program/camp ends. We can be flexible and will work around existing family plans, but need your commitment for the duration of the program/camp once you've registered. Safe@Home Course - Safe@Home June 13th (Saturday afternoon) Safe@Home by Safe Sitter® is a program designed for students in grades 4-6 to prepare them to be safe and care for themselves when their parents are away for short periods of time. This is an instructor facilitated program that teaches students how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. Students are also introduced to the Safe Sitter® First Aid Chart and learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses. Safe@Home is ideal for students that have expressed interest in assuming the responsibility of staying home alone. The program is designed to prepare students for their first steps towards independence. (Class Fee includes a student handbook & a gift bag). *This is not a babysitter certification course (you can register for that course through Recreation). Upcoming Courses: Each of the upcoming courses covers the same material, please only sign up for one session.Small class sizes, 9 spots in each session.
Upcoming 2026 Classes Students in grades 6-8 that are interested in learning how to stay home alone safely as well as care for younger children should complete one of the SafeSitter babysitting courses. The SafeSitter course is currently being offered by the Cheshire Park & Recreation Department several times throughout the school year. Use the link below to see current offerings.
