Water Quality
Chesprocott Health District conducts weekly bathing water sampling at Mixville in the swimming area. Water testing begins the week before Memorial Day weekend and continues through Labor Day weekend. Samples are analyzed for indicator bacteria, which do not cause disease themselves, but are one of the tools used by public health officials to evaluate the potential contamination of waterbodies. Specifically, indicator bacteria are used to predict the threat of waterborne illness by detecting potential contamination from fecal material of human or animal origin. Beach closure determinations are made by Chesprocott using indicator bacteria data from the weekly tests and best professional judgement i.e. closure after a heavy rainfall. The indicator organisms to be used for monitoring swimming water quality in Freshwater as established by the Connecticut Department of Public Health is E. coli. A concentration of E. coli organisms less than or equal to 235 per 100 ml is generally considered satisfactory for a single sample from a swimming area. If there are more questions, call Chesprocott for more information at (203) 272-2761.
